Providing maternal and child healthcare services in rural areas

Annual Goal: $$40,000.00

Year to Date Gifts: YTDTOTAL

Describe the need affecting community
In South Sudan, one in five children do not live to be five-years-old. Also, for every 50 live births, one mother dies. Prenatal care by a medical professional is non-existent in this rural area, and mothers do not give birth in a medical facility. There is a need for a nurse mid/wife to provide medical care to mothers and young children. A laboratory technician is needed to assist in providing the appropriate medical treatment. Because of the continued civil war in the country, the United Nations had declared a famine in South Sudan and 1,000,000 more people are on the brink of starvation. Jonglei State, where the clinic is located, is one of the three states identified by the UN as being food insecure. No international aid reached the clinic area in 2014, 2015, or 2016, and none is expected in 2017. Compounding this problem is lack of food and the inability of people to afford the food that is available in the market. Because travel by road is not safe in all areas, delivery of food to markets is unpredictable and not consistent. The cost of food has increased by 800% to 1,000% in a past two years. The people of rural South Sudan, who rely on subsistence farming and raising cattle, do not have cash to pay for food for their families.
How will this Advance project help to address the need?

Food distribution from the Buckeye Clinic was conducted every other month since April 2014, and is planned to continue in 2017. Through February 2017 171,000 pounds of food has been distributed from the Buckeye Clinic. The two-football size garden inside the clinic compound fence also provides fresh vegetables for the community. In 2016 the Buckeye Clinic constructed permanent staff housing with electricity with the hope of attracting medical professionals to the area. Although a peace agreement was signed in August 2015, fighting and instability continues. When the area is determined to be safe, the Buckeye Clinic will continue its efforts, in collaboration with the County and State Ministry of Health, to provide funding for a nurse mid/wife and laboratory technician. In 2016, the staff housing went under construction in early part of 2016. This will help attract professional medical staff to the village.

Describe the primary goal of the project

1. To improve maternal and child health in the Piol area. The long-term impact will be healthier women and children. 2. To provide adequate food to the people of the Piol who have been unable to plant and grow crops during the civil conflict. The long-term impact will enable the people of the village to survive and thrive.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project.

1. We will request that the Ministry of Health provide the Routine Monthly Report by Health Facility, as had been provided prior to the conflict. This report provides data on number of visits per age group, purpose of the visit, number of immunizations, the number of pre and post natal, well baby visits, etc. 2. We will advocate for the government securing partnerships in health services and monitor their progress. 3. We will document the food distribution including number of pounds of food by type, and number of households and people served.
